Warriors vs. Soldiers

By Vic Magary, Author of The 31 Day Fat Loss Cure, Personal Trainer and Former U.S. Soldier

Back in the day when I was serving in the Army in Korea I was on guard duty. I was on a rock. This was no ordinary rock, mind you.

This was a two-hundred pound rock proudly displayed on top of a hill in front of our barracks painted with our unit’s crest. A few rowdy drunk soldiers had decided to roll this rock down the hill the night before.

To prevent future rock rolling, a guard roster was drafted to keep watch. It was my shift.

My platoon sergeant came up to me and started to chat.

He asked, “Magary, why do you think the soldiers pushed our rock down the hill last night?” I responded, “because the Army does not teach discipline, Sergeant.”

This sergeant had been in the Army for twenty years and was most obviously upset by my response.

“What do you mean the Army doesn’t teach discipline?! Our soldiers are up at 0530 every day for physical training!

They are never late, their boots are shined and their uniforms are pressed. If that’s not discipline, then you tell me what is, Specialist!”

“Sergeant, how many of the soldiers are up at 0530 on their day off?

The only reason they are early risers is because they fear what will happen if they disobey an order. Soldiers are not disciplined, they are obedient.”

My response earned me a hefty number of pushups which I obediently performed, of course.

Discipline is willingly enduring temporary discomfort for a greater gain in the future.

Discipline involves making this choice.

Discipline is doing the right thing for the sake of doing the right thing even when that thing is difficult.

Obedience is a tool that can be used to train the will. The compliance of the will is an important ingredient in the early stages of learning discipline. The later stages of discipline are almost effortless. As discipline becomes habit, it becomes second nature.

Soldiers are not trained to think for themselves. Soldiers are trained to forgo creativity and do only exactly as they are told. Soldiers are obedient.

Warriors are curious beings. Warriors believe they can always do better, so they continuously challenge convention as well as themselves. Warriors maintain practices that help them achieve their goals and get rid of practices that prove ineffective.

Warriors are disciplined.

Soldiers march. Warriors dance. Be a Warrior.
