I love my dog Coda. But I hate all of the dog hair in the house. And I especially hate it when dog hair gets in my bedroom or bathroom. So since Coda’s first day in the house, I’ve had a baby gate up that does not allow him access to the part of my house where my bedroom and bathroom are.
But the thing is, Coda weighs 80 pounds. And that baby gate is just barely wedged between the doorway that keeps him at bay. If he just accidentally leaned on the gate, it would tumble to the floor and I’d end up with a big Golden Retriever in my bed. And all of that dog hair too. Nasty!
Well this morning, it happened
The gate crashed to the floor, I heard his nails scurry with excitement across my wood floors, and in one bound I had Coda jumping on the bed and licking my face. After laughing hysterically for a moment, I knew I had to nip this in the bud fast. So I lead Coda out of the bedroom, put the baby gate back up, and went back to bed. But it was too late. . .
Just one time is all he needed to learn he was mightier than the flimsy baby gate. No sooner than I crawled back into bed, did he come barreling back into my room to give me another dose of dog hair. Oh, Coda!
It took Coda nearly 2 years to figure out that the obstacle in his way was nothing. And that’s because for 2 years he didn’t even try to knock it down.
How many times do we let our own false assumptions prevent us from even trying to go for what we want? How many times do we neglect the effort for no other reason than we are scared that we might fail?
Your Self Imposed Limitations Are Holding You Back
Ask for that raise. Reach out to that long lost relative that you haven’t spoken to in years because of some silly spat. Tell that woman behind the counter at the coffee shop that you think she is beautiful. And take a stand regarding your own health and fitness and start eating and training in a way that will get you to your goals. Today.
Lift heavier. Move faster. Get leaner. Today.
It’s time for that baby gate in your mind to come crashing down.
Train Hard,
Vic

Vic, let Coda access your bedroom and bathroom, really your dog’s hair is fine, just vaccuum more often, good exercice!:) I’ve had two female rottweillers, consecutively not at the same time. Got them to sleep in a cage as pups next to my bed and then got rid of the cage and replace it with a very large cushion, they knew their place and were never allowed to jump on the bed. It is very comforting for them to hear our breathing and if there is any strange noise, you’ll know fast.
I live in an appartment now and would not keep a dog like a rottweiller cramped in it, but I wouldn’t mind their hair as I have fond memories of all the time with them. Such tremendeous presence.
Thanks for sharing your knowledge of diet and exercised, I did loose a very stubborn 10 lbs! at age 62

Yay Coda! What are you going to do now, Vic? Anyway, thanks. It so happens that today I ended an almost 3 week period of no activity, I do mean none at all. I don’t know what happened, just did not feel like it. Miraculously, I did not gain weight back. And remember, we had Thanksgiving in there. So, today, I got back on it, and that workout KICKED my 62 year old ASS! I could not get through 4 rounds. So thanks, Vic, for this little piece of overcomer magic. It could not have hit my mailbox at a better time. Burrpees tomorrow!

Vic,
Thanks for a thoughtful post. I did the exact same thing-used a baby gate to keep my dog Bridget out of my bedroom and bathroom. She got on her belly and crawled underneath it. Where there’s a will…….We can learn a lot from our dogs.
You might check into getting a gate made especially for dogs, they may be made a little stronger.
Thanks again for the post–just what I needed to hear today!

Yes indeed Vic, even if we know our greatest accomplishments have come through starting something and finishing it when we did not know if it was possible. I still hesitate but not now, not this time, i will be working out today and watching my beloved Wolverines try to overcome something that I wonder if they even believe in, the difference for me is I believe and will not let up. This is for all ages, even those of us over 60 because the future for us all is in our health.
