Should You Train Your Legs?

You always see them in the gym. You know the guys who’ll brag about their bench press prowess and crank away at the lat pull down machine?

When they take their shirts off, you can see they are fitness mag cover ready… from the waist up at least.

Barring a medical restriction, there is absolutely no excuse to avoid the big lifts that involve the muscles of the lower body.

And I’m not talking about wimpy leg curls here. I’m talking about squats and deadlifts and all their different versions.

Listed below are the 6 most important reasons you should be working out your legs if you aren’t already.

1. Without leg strength, the real world will knock you on your ass. Imagine pushing your neighbor’s car when it’s stuck in the snow, or, hauling bags of mulch out of your trunk, or perhaps moving your couch to the perfect spot in line with your big screen TV. In all of these tasks, and most of life’s physical tasks, your lower body muscles are going to be the primary movers. Your squats and deadlifts will pay off immensely when you find yourself in these situations.

2. More metabolic bang for your buck – Did you know the muscles of the legs are the biggest muscles of the body?

Moving large muscles requires a lot of energy – meaning more burned calories.. You can bench press from dawn till dusk, but nothing is going to jumpstart your metabolism like some heavy squats and deadlifts.

3. Improves your athleticism – All athletic movement involves the opening and closing of the hip. Think about punching, throwing and jumping. All of these movements commence with the hip closing to some extent and then opening powerfully. I don’t care if it’s smacking a home run or playing catch with your son, the power for these movements is grounded in the lower body muscles..

4. Moving big weight is gratifying. Nothing can replace the feeling of grabbing the bar and pulling several hundred pounds off the floor.

Your deadlift should be the strongest of all your lifts. And if it isn’t, with training it will quickly catch up and surpass your bench press.

Moving big weight is what being strong is all about – and the strength you build up in the gym with lower body training will carry over well into real life..

5. You’ll see your biggest strength and muscle gains. Anyone who has ever done a typical muscle magazine workout that doesn’t include squats and deads, will see the fastest and largest strength gains in their life once they start doing squats and deadlifts.

Single joint movements like calf raises will make you laugh after you see the gains squats and deads can give you.

6. You’ll have a great ass. There. I said it. Guy or girl, straight or gay, I don’t know any healthy person who doesn’t appreciate a firm and shapely butt on their significant other.

We all know guys love a nice ass, and studies also show that girls find a guy’s butt their most attractive body part.

Either way you need to start working on your legs as they set the foundation for making the rest of your body look good!
