Nutrition Lessons I Learned In The ARMY

“Take a bite out of that apple, finish your milk, and get the hell out of my chow hall!”
Apparently my five minutes for lunch were up and the drill sergeant was making sure I wasn’t going to steal an extra second. Or an extra bite.
I was at Ft. Benning, Georgia going through Basic Training to become an infantry soldier. The training was rigorous, the sleep was short, and the food was intentionally sparse.
We were given three meals each day – breakfast, lunch, and dinner with no snacks in between meals. Our allotted time for each meal was literally five minutes from the time you sat down to the last bite you were allowed to put in your mouth. This time restriction naturally lead to calorie restriction. And the calorie restriction helped turn a bunch of soft young punks into a platoon of lean and fit soldiers. For me personally, that meant going from 175 pounds to just under 150 pounds in eight weeks.
The importance of proper eating habits cannot be over emphasized in regards to your weight loss quest. I will go as far as to say that what you eat is THE most important factor in reducing your body fat. And you have to keep in mind that even food that is good for you will pack on the pounds if you eat way too much of it (how do you think bodybuilders get so big?). Below are a few guidelines that will help keep you on track without having to actually count calories or have a drill sergeant stand over you with a stop watch.
-> Most veggies you can eat with reckless abandon. Spinach, broccoli, celery, asparagus, and kale are a few examples of vegetables that you can eat as much of as you like without hindering your weight loss efforts. Just keep in mind that these vegetables should be eaten raw or lightly cooked and without any sauces to qualify as “reckless abandon” foods.
-> Many fruits you can eat without being overly concerned with quantity. Apples are my favorite here – and I will often eat as many as 3 apples per day when trying to get lean. Blueberries and grapefruit are other excellent fruit choices. A few fruits that I have seen give clients trouble when eaten in high quantities are bananas, cantaloupe, mango, and honeydew.
-> Monitor your meat. Yes, I am a fan of meat as part of your weight loss nutrition. Beef, chicken, turkey, pork, and fish are all fine as long as they are relatively lean cuts, cooked properly, and eaten in a reasonable quantity. So what is a reasonable quantity? The palm of your hand is a good guide for most people – and that goes for both the thickness and size of the meat selected. To get a little more specific, 4 – 6 ounces (staying as close to 4 ounces as you can) is good for most people.
-> Don’t go nuts with the nuts. Many nuts are loaded with healthy fat and other nutrients but they are easy to over eat. I’m a big fan of almonds because they are easy to count. 5 – 8 almonds will be about the right amount for most people when snacking. Another good guide for nuts is a single layer in the center of your palm – not your entire palm, just the center. And whether you eat almonds, walnuts, cashews, or macadamia nuts, be sure to get them raw which means no additional sugar, oils or salt.
Avoiding sugary snacks and other junk foods are obviously important when you are trying to lose fat. Eliminating starchy carbohydrate foods like bread and pasta is also important, though less obvious to many people. But limiting the quantity of even some of the foods that are good for you, can seem counter-intuitive and be a difficult concept for many to grasp. But getting frustrated about it is like getting frustrated that the sky is blue when your favorite color is red.

I started your program on August 12, 2010 and I’m down 15.6 lbs already! I thought that I ate very well before but I just couldn’t lose the weight. People called me a health nut. I kept gaining about 7-10lbs every year. So, what I did was practically kill myself on my Gerbel machine, P90X and I would lose a pound here or there. I was sooooo frustrated!!!! Once I took whole grains out of my diet, the weight started to fall off. I was so surprised. One change is all it took. I am a vegetarian and not one to eat much processed foods. I miss my organic cereal in the morning sometimes but I miss the weight more. Thank you for sharing this program with the average people of the world. God bless.

Vic, I am HWP according to all standards and my BMR is 22. I hate the way gravity has pulled down whatever body fat I have. My muffin-top infuriates me and my butt needs a good kicking! I am 57 and have been health conscious since I watched Jack LaLaine on a B+W TV in the 50′s.
My biggest challenge is staying away from carbs. I have a personal relationship with bread. I know how important it is to stay away from refined carbs and I see a major difference when I abstain, but I understand an addicts dilemma.
I fully support any program that encourages healthy eating and gets people moving!

This may sound strange, but ever since I was a kid (I’m 44 now), I’ve been putting orange juice in my cereal instead of milk. Never really liked milk much. Try it, you might like it!

I have found Hemp Milk at Trader Joe’s. It has all 22 of the essential amino acids making it high in protein and all of the essential fatty acids. It is very nutritious, just make sure you get the one without the sugar. In addition, you can buy hemp meal or hemp seeds and grind them for extra protein and good fats. Orange juice on cereal is fat loss suicide, you will spike your blood sugars and stimulate your insulin response for sure! Almond milk without sugar is very good, high in magnesium but stay away from the soy.

What do you think about Ezekiel bread It is whole grain but it’s supposed to be sprouted, flourless and full of protein.

Heather- I have been eating Ezekiel bread with this program (just a slice or two a day with extra-virgin coconut oil as a spread) & I’ve had amazing results! It might be better without it but it certainly isn’t nearly as bad as non-sprouted grain when you NEED something from the bread group!

If you want to stay away from the carbs, I have discovered “Scandanavian GG Brancrisp”. They are little crackers the are mostly wheat bran and just a little rye flour. They have 10 calories and 5 grams of fiber each. I use them to hold my tuna, smoked salmon, sliced low fat turkey or roast beef with a little mustard, tomato and lettuce. Not the most delicious thing but filling and great fiber. I order them from Amazon or the website. Just google it. Very inexpensive but I suggest you get a small amount until you figure out if you like them or not. Just don’t think of them as bread!

Hey guys – the exercises Im talking about for abs are this…
- stop doing crunches/situps
- focus on compound exercises like squats, shoulder presses, pushups – these exercises in the 31 DFLC will give you better abs than crunches and situps any day of the week

I have started to read all your material and like what I read. Especially the quantity of nuts to take and the raw or lightly cooked vegetables. I plan on starting the 31 day program in earnest (combined with Fusion Fitness – pillates and Yoga exercises I now do) on January 10th, 2011. I am 183 pounds and 61 years of age and have been relatively active most of my life. My doctor says I am in good health so all is a go! Thanks for your daily e-mails giving tips and encouragement! Love the tips you keep adding, answers a lot of questions but what about tomatoes as it is a fruit and I believe with complex carbs.Can you shed the light on this as with other fruits like cherries, strawberries and the like. im convinced this is the best hope i have to lose weight. all the other programs are filled with lies trying to convince me to purchase supplements or special equipment or asking for long cardio sessions or complicated routines i know i will never do. this all makes sense. i am taking my BEFORE pics this weekend and getting started, as soon as my guests return home. ive already trashed all my bread, crackers and leftover pizza. question: any reason you dont mention pistachios in your list of nuts? i have huge gift bags of them from christmas. some of them are salted.

Hey, Vic. Just started your Program (14 day warm up, then the 31 day will follow). My 2nd day of exercise is tomorrow (really needed that day off today – ouch!) but so pleased I’ve started. This is not only good for the body, but for the mind, the morale – everything. All of a sudden I’m determined to meet all my other goals for this year – small and large – and am supporting my goals with a timed action plan for each step along the way! Just starting the workout today. Didn’t do half the reps etc. of the exercises but you still kicked my ass. I’ll just do what I can each day and watch my ability go up. The food’s not too much of a stretch for me as I eat pretty healthily normally, but I will miss good bread and cereal in the morning…

I’d like to echo Gary’s question about tomatoes. My wife usually cooks our meat in a tomato/spaghetti sauce. There’s no sugar added, but tomatoes have a lot of natural sugar. What do you think?

This Diet plan and exercise is great, onto week two and still losing weight and building fitness. I I started at 92.5kgs and am now down to 87.7kgs, I have never seen my weight go down so fast, cheers for all those supportive e-mails and ideas. Can you suggest any other exercise instead of the baby burpees? as I have 3 slipped discs and find them painful to do

I used your 5 day meal plan just not sure about the weekends, just continue it through 7 days for the 31 days? Im 46 so the workouts are very challenging and i thought i was in pretty good shape already. Like Steve I also started the program 5 days ago and I am down 5 lbs. and I am also ex military and I am using the 5 day meal plan and I am 46 as well. I have made a schedule list and I am rotating the 5 day meal plan for the next 62 days. By the way I also thought I was in shape and found out that if you don’t stretch after the warm up and after the exercises, you will feel your muscles sore the next day. I should know better, but for some reason I forgot. It will not happen again.

I like your solid, no-nonsense info. This sounds “doable.” I started on the senior/disabled plan and have improved a lot in a few days. I am a terrible record-keeper, but know I’m improving. My jeans are looser and I finally got below 200#. My goal is 135# which is what I should be and what I was until I reached 40. Then, I swiftly when up-up-and-away!!
I’ve tried everything over and over again. This time has got to be “it.”
I have dropped dairy, bread and sugar. I suffered like no other for a few days from withdrawals, I guess. Then, I suffered from soreness like I’d been beaten, but I see progress. I like the idea about eating in five min. and not eating cereal or whole grains. I missed milk more than anything, but am over that now. I started at 210# and am now 195#. I’m 72. Got a long way to go, but am hopeful. Feel better. Clothes looser. Get around faster and am more agile. I have accepted the challenge. I hope I can get someone to take my picture, even though I am ashamed of the way my belly hangs down!

Thanks for all the tips and extra materials. Just one question about this post, though. I have a friend from India where cashews are grown and he warned me one day that raw cashews are poisonous. Something about the roasting process makes them edible. Have you heard this, or if you have eaten raw cashews, were there any side effects? Thanks again.

Your Indian friend is right on when he said that cashews are poisonous. The skins may be part of it like Neeta says, but there is more. The uncooked, unsalted “raw” cashews that are sold over the counter, have already been processed to make them edible without killing you. Off the tree raw cashews are poisonous, peeled or not.

I just started the program last week and lost 2 lbs. I have been on the P90X program for one year but have not lost the inches around the waist. I remain at 37 in waist. I run 5 days a week for 45 minutes and that also has not reduced the waist.
Since on the diet, I am constantly hungry. I tend to overdo the nuts.

I started losing weight on my own before I saw your site. Interesting because I did exactly what you recommended on my own – cut out the wheat and dairy.
I also exercised first thing in the morning before breakfast for ten minutes on a cross training machine that my partner had given me for Christmas. I found this worked for me because it really puffed me out and made me lose my appetite, often for the whole morning – I could live without breakfast. Also it made me drink a lot of water, which I don’t normally do, as I became hot and thirsty. The water I think also cut out my hunger feelings as it filled up my stomach. It also kick started my metabolism and made me much more energetic for the day.
I started about 2 months ago and have dropped from 87 kilos to 75.4 kilos so I am delighted. I was absolutely starving, mostly in the evenings, at first, because I also used the technique of not eating carbs after 5 or 6 pm and not eating at all after 8 pm.
I wasn’t doing much in the evening anyway that required energy so just sat with the hungry feelings, watching the feelings a bit like you might do in meditation. Just noticing how feeling hungry felt like, and noticing it didn’t “kill” me. I’ve never allowed myself to feel hungry before – I’ve instantly eaten something to get rid of the feeling. Now the feeling has mutated a bit – I feel not exactly hungry but something else – it’s quite strange. I think my stomach has shrunk a bit.
Also I’ve noticed I don’t do as much pooh in the morning as the volume of food with no bread and pasta has brought the overall volume down quite a bit. (sorry!)
I do eat a bit of rice sometimes but in small portion sizes. Sometimes the no carbs thing gets too much for me and as long as I lose a pound a week or so I know I am still going in the right direction! I don’t want to give up so allow myself these treats some times, and it is wheat and cheese that personally I think are more he culprits. (I havn’t eaten cheese in 2 months and don’t miss it). I also have soya milk instead of milk but I think this has quite a lot of calories – I may change to almond milk as someone suggested.
I also eat oats in the mornings with sunflower seeds and pumpkin seeds, this keeps me going until about 2 in the afternoon without feeling hungry. Or sometimes I don’t eat breakfast at all, depending.
I find eating rice and dahl (lentils) (add carrots and/or onions which makes it quite sweet in taste) is good as it is zero fat and very filling so you don’t need huge portions. I would say the same for beans – I have lost weight before eating beans and pulses as they contain no fat.
Also I may have the occasional bread roll for lunch with salad and ham or smoked salmon with no butter though, maybe once every 2 weeks – as long as I know it’s not every day. Where I’ve gone wrong in the past is giving up if I havn’t stuck to it to the letter – a bit of what you fancy occasionally is OK as long as it doesn’t become all the time like before.
Also I’ve found that if I crave sweet things, a tiny taste of it can be just as satisfying as having a standard portion. So sometimes I’ll have a tiny sliver of chocolate tort or whatever is being offered. Or a tiny sliver of fruit cake – where before I would have had a whole slice, with huge numbers of calories, now I find I can really savour the taste of a very small amount – and then perhaps do more exercise to make up for it. Can be gardening or anything. Or walking the kids to school. Or cycling instead of taking the car. (I have huge bicycle panniers so can even do quite a bit of shopping on my bike – I look like Mr. Posty!)
I have used an exercise videos at weekends. I buy them from charity shops for 10p each and just do one of each. I used to never do exercise videos because I thought I’d have to do them loads of times and it put me off. Now I just do each exercise video/yoga video once or more if I feel like it, so it’s a “new adventure” each time.
Havn’t yet tried your exercises apart from the squats – my legs did ache afterwards but I should done stretching first I think. I found I could not do the press ups (well did ten from the knees and gave up), but will try again having got more instruction on how to do press ups from your knees in the ladies gym.
Ladies I’ve been told cannot do full push ups as they’re made differently and I would have to agree.I don’t know if this changes as you get stronger and leaner. (Also we have the extra boob weight to press up! Although I have drastically reduced from the HH I was – I no longer have that “matronly” look.) I am 51.
I think you’re right also about the support of other people being extremely important – my partner is being very supportive in saying things like “hunger is good – that means it’s working” and “you don’t need to eat”, or, “you’ve eaten enough for the day” and stuff, whereas before he just used to say he loved me no matter what size I was – in fact he seemed to prefer me bigger., or say “eat if you’re hungry”.
The fact is I was always hungry, partly because I was eating the wrong kinds of foods so my body just kept saying “more!” Now I’m eating salads and vegs and meat and fish I don’t feel as hungry. (he does sometimes say “You’re shrinking!” rather sadly.) So this website for example is very useful.
Anyway keep up the good work. I love getting the e-mails, and your enthusiasm and helpful tips.

I’m a 47 year-old woman, a breast cancer survivor. Treatment a couple of years ago left me pretty depleted and inactive and I find myself needing to lose a good 25-30 lbs. I’m into day 10 of your program and am really liking it and getting very good results. I’m down a good 6 lbs. I’ve been surprised to find that I haven’t a problem with leaving out the dairy and the whole grains and have been very satisfied. I have a couple of questions…
First, I’ve included some avocado with many of my meals — no more than a quarter of an avocado at a time. I realize that it’s a fat, but I’ve heard that it’s very good for you. Should I cut out the avocado? Or how much should I limit it to? I don’t see avocado on any of your lists — either for or against.
Second, I’m wondering about your thoughts on chocolate milk as a post-workout supplement. I know it’s being hyped as a super-food right now. I ask because I know that in terms of the carbohydrate meals that you do permit always come immediately after a workout. The problem for me is that the last thing I want to do after working out is eat anything — especially oatmeal or brown rice or potatoes, let alone tuna. I’m really one of those people who’s averse to eating after a workout. At the same time, I do feel depleted after a workout and I’m usually thirsty. Could I substitute 1 8-oz glass of chocolate milk for the “high carb” post-workout meal?

Avocado is great. Treat them like nuts and limit your portions. A quarter of an avocado sounds just right.
The more I train clients and myself the more I steer away from recommending the grain or dairy carbs – even post workout. If you are not hungry, do not force yourself to eat. I suspect you will feel ready to eat an hour or two after training.

I am seeing good results with your programme after just 2 weeks. I’ve been having some problems lately though, I work night shifts and go to bed in the morning. I used to have a few sandwiches a few hours before going to bed, but I cut all the bread now with your Fat Loss Cure. Now I just have some nuts and not much else, but I keep waking up every day after just 4 hours or so, and in the night I get very sleepy at one point, and it’s even dangerous at work getting sleepy. I guess I wake up early cause my stomach feels hungry, though I don’t exactly feel it that way. I’ve read it’s normal to have such sleeping problems when you do a weight loss programme. Do you have some suggestions about what is good to eat before going to bed, to not keep your stomach starving ?

Hello Vic,
The first week is over, Low Impact for Active Seniors with Injuries. I am seeing much better than expected results, 3.3kg .. about 7.1/4lbs. I know those numbers will diminish fairly rapidly from now on, and continued weight/fat loss will be a fight, and I will win.
No problems with the diet, even the beer! Might have been a different story if it was summertime; here in Oz it is mid-winter.

Question:- Workout D, 1minute drill. Is that it? 60secs of wall p/ups plus 60secs of partial squats? 120 seconds and it is all over?
Workouts A & C are not favourites, but it is a teriffic programme.

Good post. I was a little lost on the portion sizes before. I think its very good to use “units” like “size or your palm”, or “single layer in the center of your palm”, etc. You need to come up with more of those. I personally hate to have to get a measuring or weighing device out to know how much is the right amount. The other thing is I realize now its important to keep a reasonable time schedule. I’m all over the place, I work from home, and live alone so my meals are anarchic. Some times I’ll have “breakfast” at noon and lunch at 4pm, then dinner at God knows what time. I guess that’s not too good, huh? (there’s a question in there somewhere).
An other comment: The guide, or manual needs some tiding up. Table of contents should have page numbers to the sections, and you should number all the pages. In you “infomercial” you say: “…on page 19, you’ll learn about a well kept secret (this or that)…”, but there are no page numbers, and where do you start to count “pages”? after the legal disclaimer, or is the cover page 1? Either way what you are saying in your sales pitch, does not jive with the manual, content wise. I’m not complaining about the content. I think it’s very good, I like the results so far, there is a lot of great information, without being overwhelming. That is very good. I think the key to your success is: keep it simple” and “no BS”.

Day 7 of program, I can see the difference. Struggled through a baby shower a few days ago…rough.-(cake, crackers, tuna salad,seafood salad, swedish meatballs, punch,horrible to sit through) Husband doing it with me…had no choice and he’s lost about 7 pounds.
My 10 year old is a gymnast that goes 3 times a week for 4 hours a pop and was starting to gain weight yall. She used to be a little stick so I never worried before. I was dumbfounded…didn’t know what to do… I took her off all that cereal and milk. I told her she can have it once a week and removed the bread. She is doing the workouts with me in the morning before she goes to school. I looked around my pantry and realized I had nothing but packaged foods..granola bars, powdered shakes, protein powders, yogurts, crackers, cheezits, pastas, etc. My cupboards are almost bare.
Froze my strawberries and bananas…peeled an orange and added this with a little almond milk, vanilla and walnuts, it was a nice breakfast for us…
Seem to get hungry in the evenings for some reason. I cut up some apples the other night and sprinkled cinnamon on them and heated them in the microwave for about a minute. Helped with the cravings…Yes, having horrendous cravings…
LOVE the WORKOUTs… I literally was the one that was on that treadmill for 2 hours. For real…would watch all my reality shows, Law and Order, CSI shows on the treadmill and was barely losing a pound… I was so proud of myself on that thing…ragging my husband for not getting on… He won’t do the exercises by the way, but at least he started somewhere.
Before that I was told not to exercise by Dramatic Weight Loss- here in the ATL because my calorie count was 600 per day. Yes, I lost 25 pounds doing this diet, but the cellulite I developed was horrifying and embarrassing.. and I gained every ounce back plus I was hooked on the phentermine. Because of that experience, it has caused me a hard time trying a program like the 31 day fat loss cure because I was calorie struck…always afraid to eat something… literally even after I gained all the weight back, I was barely eating anything… I was working for 12 hours and eating a boiled egg, a shake, coffee with splenda, etc, then binging on gummy bears and ice cream on my days off.
I can live with this…

I started your program 1 week ago (11/14) and as of today (11/21) 3.0 lbs lost and starting to feel my legs get strong again. (I’ve laid off of lifting for the last 5 years due to a serious car accident, after 30+ years of being in tip top shape) The first few days I was a little wobbly, but am starting to feel strong again! The diet works if you work it, get creative with spices so you don’t get bored.

Hey Vic, I just ordered the program and I’m waiting for it to come in. I’ve noticed your diet plan seems to be identical with “The Paleo Diet”. I was just curious why low fat dairy is a no no. Thanks

For optimum weight loss results, avoid milk completely. But if you do have milk, I prefer the least processed form available which is one of the reasons I prefer whole milk over low fat.

Hi Floyd, I recommend avoiding all juices even if you fresh squeeze them yourself. I also recommend avoiding all sweeteners including honey.
