What My Golden Retriever Coda Can Teach You About Fat Loss…

I took my beloved Golden Retriever Coda to the vet yesterday for his yearly check up and shots.

And at barely three years old, Coda is overweight. Yep, that’s kind of embarrassing for a fat loss expert to own a fat dog. But Coda needs to lose 10 pounds. And 10 pounds is pretty significant when you only weigh 80 pounds.

But here’s the thing, Coda only eats food that is good for him. He eats a brand of dry dog food that gets the seal of approval from his vet. He shares my morning grapefruit and the occasional apple or banana. But that’s it. No table scraps. Almost no dog treats. But I suppose he does get a rawhide bone about twice per week. . .

The point I’m trying to make is that even food that is “good” for you can pack on the pounds.

Just about all vegetables, especially the leafy green variety, will be exempt from this for sure. But meat, dairy, some fruits, and especially nuts can all make weight loss challenging when eaten in excess quantities. If you are eating all of the right things and you are still not losing weight, then it’s a good idea to examine the amount of the foods you are eating.

Meat should be kept to a serving size of about the size of your palm.

The sweeter fruits like melons, mango, and banana should be used in limited quantities. Nuts should be eaten in an amount that would be level in just the center of your palm. Dairy should be avoided if possible, and if you are going to use it keep the quantity very low.

Another culprit to look out for is alcohol. I know there are plenty of studies out there that show that moderate drinking can have some health benefits. And I have personally been able to get lean while still drinking one or two glasses of red wine each week. But if you’ve hit a plateau, it is worth experimenting with complete abstinence from alcohol for a few weeks to see if it has a positive effect on your weight loss effort.

And no, Coda does not drink alcohol. At least not much. I have splashed a small amount of beer in his water bowl before, and he did love the taste!

I know it can be frustrating to eat all of the right foods and still see your weight loss plateau. When that happens, it’s time to get a bit microscopic on the situation and examine the finer details. Eat all of the green leafy veggies you want. But scrutinize the quantity of the meat, dairy, fruit, and nuts you are eating if your weight loss hits a sticking point.

Til next time… Train hard!

I’m curious about the dairy food restrictions in your diet recommendations. Is it the fat in dairy foods or the lactose that you are seeking to minimize? Or maybe even something else? I’m sure you’re aware pretty much all dairy foods come in fat free varieties these days. That’s all I use-

@ John – Its more the processed nature of dairy – just think about how most hardgainers use dairy as a way to bulk up. Not to mention most people just flat out feel much better once they stop eatin dairy.

I bet it’s the lactose. Diabetic diets restrict your milk intake for the sugar. The sugar in fat free milk can raise your blood sugar even faster, because there is no fat. Then again, whole milk has all those calories from the fat.
