My 7 Favorite Protein Sources

by Vic Magary – Former ARMY Soldier & Author of The 31 Day Fat Loss Cure

Protein is well known as essential for the building and repair of muscle.  And if you are trying to lose weight, you can get all of the protein you need from real food – no magic potions or powders necessary.  Below are my 7 favorite protein sources, in no particular order.

1.  Eggs. They’re not just for breakfast.  I often have an omelet made with two eggs and lots of veggies for lunch or dinner.  And if you like your eggs hard-boiled, they make a great transportable snack.

2.  Beef. I’m partial to sirloin and grass-fed when I can find it.  But any lean cut that you like will do.  I usually make my steak stir fried in a wok with olive oil or grilled on my clamshell style contraption that bares the name of a former heavy weight champ.

3.  Chicken breast. I buy my mine boneless, skinless, and free range when I can find it.  And if you prefer the thighs and legs, those are fine too.  Just avoid the deep fried drenched-in-sauce chicken wings.

4.  Tuna. Tuna steaks on the grill are great, but I’m talking about good old canned tuna.  I’m partial to the albacore in water variety that comes in the smaller 3 ounce cans.  I usually just drain it and eat it straight from the can with some carrots or celery.

5.  Whole Milk. Over the years, I’ve had fitness clients that actually want to put on some weight.  And when they do, lots of whole milk is always one of my recommendations.  But if you are trying to lose weight, stay away from the milk even though it can be a good protein source.

6.  Pork. I like the occasional grilled pork chop or pork loin stir fry for dinner.  And pork is usually available at a much cheaper price when compared to beef.

7.  Chicken Sausage.

Your standard beef or pork sausage is often loaded with preservatives and other stuff you’d rather avoid.  But you can find chicken sausage in the “gourmet” section that has only all natural ingredients.  I like the precooked variety (although I usually still grill them) as an emergency protein source.  If I’m in a rush, I can grab one of the sausages and eat it in the car with no problem.

So there you have my 7 favorite protein sources.  Yes, I prefer animal sources for protein.  But vegetarians stay tuned. . . in a future article I’ll list some of my favorite vegetarian protein sources.

This past week, I hit my 31 days. I started at 183 pounds and weight in at 169. I’m 57 years of age and had never been so heavy. At 5’7″, my youthful weight was around 145 pounds and my waist was happy at 34″. My waist is slimming down from the tight 36″ slacks and I’m down a little over an inch. I know I was spending way to much time at the fast food joints, drinking only a cup of coffee in the morning and out to dinner most nights. My goal was to change my diet, not be on a diet, and loose 10 pounds if possible. I was curious to see if I could loose the 10 pounds just eating right. I have to admit, I haven’t started the exercise plan since I’m always on the go and pretty active doing projects around the house and running and gunning as a Realtor. When leave my home office, I make sure to pack some fruit, almonds, boiled eggs and a water bottle.

This plan really is the best I’ve ever seen. Simple and to the point. The biggest benefit has been getting up each morning, slice and dice wonderful fruit breakfast for my wife and myself. Guess who’s also loosing weight. At lunch, apples, vegetables, tuna, eggs sometimes and water. I haven’t had or missed a diet drink since I’ve started. At dinner, we split a steak, salmon steak, chicken breast and have a salad with an occasional glass of wine and we are both satisfied. When we go out to eat we’re watching what we eat, split a meal if possible and always ask for a vegetable substitute instead of the potato or rice. We’ve eliminated the ice cream, pasta dinners, and sugar as a daily stable. It wasn’t that hard to do since there is always a piece of fruit nearby if the “hungries” start creeping in. I’ve also started making sure that the fridge has water bottles ready to go instead of soft drinks. I have recycled a few bottles with tea which I consider a treat rather than a need. My new goal is to start the exercise plan and go for another 10 pounds. Who knows, I might be able to put on those 34″ slacks in the closet soon. Wish me luck.

Thanks for the daily blog intensives. I read them every day and thought it was time I pass on my success as well.

    Hi Vic

Look forward to your future article for vegetarians. I have found it quite hard to get the protein without the carbs i.e. legumes which I normally would eat good protein but carbs as well. I have been eating lots of eggs which I love (Luckily!!)

I have really enjoyed this program. It has been tough at times but now I find my whole eating habits have changed. Whilst I have always been a healthy eater I now realize my portion sizes were way too big and now am in the habit of eating much smaller portions of everything.

My favourite: The vegetable spaghetti made from zucchinis and carrotts. I love pasta and now enjoy the smallest quantity of pasta on top of my vegies with my favourite pasta sauce. I have lost 4kg (8.8lb) and I am happy with my weight now 52kg. But more importantly I am finding it easy to maintain it.

Thanks for all your wonderful advice. I know I couldn’t have done it any other way. I have tried for many years. I didn’t have much to lose but I just couldn’t budge the belly flab so I am very happy with the results of the 31 Day Fat Loss Cure! I seem to have really got my metabolism moving!

    Thanks again, Maria

  4. There has to be a method to shed extra pounds without having to exercise.I’ve attempted physical exercise training videos, crunches, jogging, …. however I do not have sufficient time to maintain fitness due to college as well as research. Can there be a method to slim down without having to do physical exercise?
